What is AI safety?

AI safety is the work of reducing the risk that increasingly capable AI systems cause harm, including severe and irreversible harm.

The main risks it deals with:

  • Misalignment and loss of controlSystems pursuing goals their developers didn’t intend, including evading oversight or resisting correction.
  • MisusePeople using AI to cause harm, such as cyberattacks or help building biological weapons.
  • Concentration of powerAI used as a tool to make society less democratic, or even taking the wheel itself.
  • MistakesSystems that fail in ordinary ways, in settings where failure is costly.
